NHLP Cup Threat Ratings For 2009/10 (After Transaction #7)

The NHLP has always came out with the Cup Threat Rating (CTR) a couple times a year.  The CTR is also known as the Power Rankings in the NHLP.  It is a time perfected, skill based, best prediction of what teams are the best and what teams have the best chance of winning it all.  It is very accurate.  Like last year it predicted Las Vegas and Dallas as being the two best NHLP teams and of course Dallas beat Las Vegas in the NHLP finals.  Nailing Florida the year before as NHLP winners and many winners over the years.  The CTR really does work.  It isn't a perfect science, but it is not a guess either.  If you are near the top, you have a good team and a shot at winning, near the bottom, a bad team with little hope as is.  The nice thing is you have the power to change your teams position at any time.  This will be on-going and ever changing all year.  How it works - Teams will move up and down based on their Transactions, NHLP Standings (Points back or points to give), Players Points,  Depth Charts, PP Time on the ice and mainly the NHL standings.  You may not like the teams seeded 1st in each Conference to win it all, but the CTR does not go by gut feelings, only 100% statistics.  It holds truest when there are no upsets (but when is that?).  This is the NHLP Power Rankings.

Notes
1 1410 (L4 - 1385) Jr Talk about top seeds!  Crosby of course, no surprise there, but GM Jr must have had some real crazy insight for he has Liles, Hejduk and Vanek all on 1-2 seeds as Colorado and Buffalo continue to win.  Even when they start to continue to lose, Jr has points, scoring and Sid.  We love what can be done but will Jr love what he ends up doing?  We'll find out...
2 1337 (L36 - 347) Henry WOW - Penner has 14 points in 9 games and Edmonton is top 4 seed.  Ottawa is in and Alfredsson and Spezza are over a PPG combined.  This Team is in first in the Pacific and about to get better when Nylander is sent down for 5 points.  This is one incredible jump and although Canada hasn't won a Cup since 1993, GM Henry's team is American!
1241 (H2 - 1587) Tyson Six playoff guys but players slowing and teams fading have dropped the CTR.  Kopitar has been great even with LA dropping seeds.  GM Tyson is still in first in the Gulf and outscoring 3 teams behind him.  Does not have a player on a top two seed East or West.
4 1116 (L15 - 973) Andrew GM Andrew moves up in CTR points even with Gonchar now out a month.  In the Southeast he continues to score.  The biggest surprise here is two Phoenix players top two seeds!  What the FUCK!
5 1085 (H8 - 1258) Michael & Ray Punks!  Fucking damn Punks!!!  Malkin, Staal and Sharp, although nothing else the youngin's are real potential to make noise all year.  What will they do under pressure is what we look most forward too?  Do your homework kiddies and be prepared, you really do have a shot at this thing and we aren't even out of October!  Great work!
6 1073 (H9 - 1221) Ryan GM Ryan is flying but although leading the Southwest, Thornton and Setoguchi are non playoff guys.  This is crazy stuff to imagine but we are 1/8th through the season.  This is the time someone makes the first move, a Savard, Datsyuk or for Ryan a Heatley.  Are they worth 20 points right now?  Don't complain when one of these guys are offered 20 tomorrow and it is excepted, for this was your heads up.  It'll happen, but will they except?
7 1042 (L28 -554) Andrew Update #4)  Nice move by GM Andrew here grabbing Pavelski.  Pavelski had a great season last year and 2 points in 2 games to start this season, with 10 shots in just those two games.  What kills here will be staying in a playoff spot in the Atlantic after losing Gagne for 6 weeks.  This team is high on Philadelphia but will likely have to change that in time to get into the playoffs.

GM Andrew got great news with Demitra going out for the season as he will now be replaced November 1st by a playoff player with 5 points.  Not too far out -  Andrew will start his climb in the Atlantic.  This team is living and dying on Philadelphia with 3 Flyers and they are borderline in.  Edmonton is looking sharp, but where this team goes at the moment rests with the Flyers.
8 1014 (L17 - 810) Jr Zetterberg and Marleau are both non playoff guys 10 games in.  Smyth is as crazy as many would think Colorado is to be sitting as the top seed in the West.  Great season so far for Pominville but as great the position in the Atlantic being 17 up, this team is only sitting with 2 playoff players.
9 1013 (H13 - 1034) Charlie Still loving this team.  Malkin is on fire and the Penguins look strong, Cup winning strong.  Campbell is scoring strong and Chicago and Washington are looking like top 4 seeds.  Battling in the Gulf with the lowest scoring team in the division, but not anything to panic about as this is a good team.
10 996 (H10 - 1158) Michael & Ray What a hit Toews took!  He was off to a slow start and now will this be a nothing or a something moving forward?  Being in last in the Atlantic doesn't mean anything as the Rooks still have a solid playoff team of 5 players with Roy leading the way.  If Toews goes long term this team will have to be broken up before it gets better.
11 972 (H14 - 978) Henry GM Henry is 20 points up in the Northeast so will be able to improve as the 4, 5 and 6th place teams suck.  Heatley is killing the ranking as he is a non playoff player.  Doan is carrying this team as Phoenix is a top 2 seed in the West.
12 958 (L35 - 367) Matt A HUGE upswing in the CTR ratings.  Ovechkin and Knuble have this team moving way up despite still 3 non playoff guys.  With room and scoring in the Central GM Matt will improve.  His first waiver of the season awaits!  Make it good, you don't have another.
13 932 (H12 - 1043, L35 - 376) Henry Update #3)  When Pavelski comes back it will be an improvement over Modano who is beyond his best years.  GM Henry has a lot of fringe playoff players who are helping the rating, but for how long?  The team drops heavily when these teams drop out but for now Henry does have good position which can only get better with more scoring from his new addition.

It seems we have just been doing this too long.  We doubted GM Henry could keep this team so high for very long.  One thing we would not have done was bet they'd crash so quickly.  Top scorers St Louis and Dumont (who is on fire) are both not playoff players.  Top seeded player is Cogliano.  Need we say more?  The lone bright spot...this team is outscoring the entire Central!
14 913 (H3 - 1478) Ryan Everyone is dropping with the NHL standings seemingly upside down.  Bourque and Neal continue to carry the team and GM Ryan has stretched out a nice 18 point lead in the Central.  The CTR loves the scoring but Vancouver and Boston have the team going in the wrong direction.
15 877 (H7 - 1262) Matt Gaborik, Carter and Tkachuck continue to score as Quebec rolls in the Northeast.  Philly is borderline playoffs and Phoenix is surprising people so it is still up in the air as to where this team fits.  What is for sure is the Northeast teams below are bad so Matt will continue to gain.
16 869 (H16 -962) Joel Kovo and Gabby are a great start and GM Joel is off to a great start, 16 up on 4th in the Atlantic.  Boston boys holding this team back.
17 867 (L20 - 760) Charlie Chuck has 6 playoff guys and is moving up without his 2nd round pick playing yet this season.  GM Charlie drafted Hossa in the 2nd round and although a few GM's thought that as a quick pick for a player out the first 25 games of the season, Charlie is doing just fine.  Chuck is in second in the Pacific without Hossa so the potential is there for making a great team even though great teams are not something Chuck is known for.
18 828 (22 - 702) Joel Crosby.  GM Joel is in second in the Southwest, meaning we'll see who he builds around Crosby.
19 807 (H5 - 1308) Scott Ottt?  Nothing we can do about that but although Ott is back Minny has taken a nose dive.  Leading scorer Stamkos has fallen out of the playoffs and although still sitting with 5 playoff guys no top seeded players.  Only New Orleans is scoring better in the Gulf so position should improve for GM Scott here.
20 804 (H11 - 1056) Matt Big Joe and Boyle mean nothing here as San Jose is out of the playoffs.  So many NHLP GM's have low ratings for they are banking on teams out of the playoffs through 10 NHL games.  This is hardly a season but are any of these current, or non current playoff teams for real?  Will a surprise team stay good, or a expected good team continue to fade?  It is always nice to be in first while the league sorts itself out.
21 794 (L21 - 713) Ryan A great position in the Northeast but horrible news with the Gonchar injury.  GM Ryan has all top scoring teams and will easily weather the storm here with high scorer Thornton.  Big Joe is sitting out of a playoff spot and has GM Ryan here way down instead of way up.
22 760 (L34 - 370) Scott SeminnimeS
23 730 (L38 - 333) Tyson Although one hell of a jump from 333 to 730 CTR points, Ovehckin is just everything for GM Tyson in Cleveland.  Detroit, Boston, Vancouver and St Louis are non playoffs (hard to believe) and Tyson has only two playoff players even though well in first in the Southeast.  Washington has moved up so with a great like Ovechkin, so of course has Tyson, but this team cannot win with just one player!
24 694 (L33 - 390) Scott Ebbett deal will keep the Flyer pulling away from teams behind.  Connolly continues to carry this team as Buffalo is the Phoenix of the East.  Will either Buffalo or Phoenix finish as playoff teams?  So far both are top 2 seeds.
25 693 (L46 - 124) Chad Updated #2)  A remarkable climb with two injury transactions has GM Chad nearing the top 20 spot.  Dropping Bouchard and adding a hot Buffalo Sabre is a great move.  How serious though is Briere's groin injury?  Missing over 50 games last year Briere is back out of the lineup and some fears are starting to creep in that maybe this groin is going to follow his career.  Still well back in the Pacific but finally going in the right direction.

Updated #1) Dropping Pavelski for Pominville caused a jump from #46 to #33, a subtle move but the rankings liked it.  Buffalo is playing well, but how well will they be as the season goes will determine if this was a good or bad move for GM Chad.

The lowest scoring NHLP team isn't that much better in the CTR ratings.   With Duncan Keith as the only playoff player GM Chad doesn't have much being in last in the Pacific, a division that already sucks.  "Henry out-scored him in a day" said Muddy Capone, "I'd hate to see this team if Danny Briere goes down next."
26 684 (H6 -1272) Ryan A huge drop for GM Ryan.  Every team dropped in the seeding.  Prospal and Mike Richards still are on fire but two Detroit players is hurting the ranking as they struggle early.
27 654 (L30 - 458) Charlie Update #7)  GM Charlie made two injury picks, but he picked up two non playoff guys in the process.  This team is nothing right now without Backstrom and only has two playoff guys and tied for 4th in the Southwest.

Talbot should turn this team around soon when he becomes a 5 point playoff guy, but in the mean time Backstrom leads the way for Chuck's Yotes.
28 632 (H1 - 1675) Joel Ok - We stand corrected.  This team was not number one.  Will they ever get back?  This is a massive drop.  Tampa Bay went from a 3rd seed to a non playoff team, so Martin St Louis goes from hot to nothing.  Chicago, Columbus and Anaheim also all drop seeds.  Toews is seeing double, but you are not, Joel's Vancouver is no where near the number one on the NHLP CTR Ranking anymore and likely never again.
29 622 (L26 - 588) Jr Horcoff has been a real disappointment with such a great Edmonton start.  Top scorer Henrik Sedin is screwing everything up with Vancouver's terrible start.
30 530 (H23 - 690) Henry Derek Roy here remains mint as Buffalo continues to shock many with their great play after 10 NHL games.  Half this team is non playoff and no position to work with.  Kovalchuk (injured or not?) must continue to score and remain a playoff player or this team dives.
31 442 (l42 - 281) Marcel GM Marcel has already started his climb but remains with only 2 playoff guys and sits in last play in the Gulf.  Getzlaf has started very slow for a 1st round pick.
32 442 (L41 - 290) Joel What a wonderful feeling this must be for GM Joel.  Oh sure he still has the lowest scoring team, sitting in last place in the Southeast Division, but he actually moved up the CTR.   Yaaaaaa (clapping hands too). Make no mistake, this team still sucks, no one worth anything...but they moved up.  Good Going Joey!!!
33 440 (H30 - 450) Andrew GM Andrew is just trying to stay close until Daniel Sedin gets back and so far, so good.    Not much is pretty here and this isn't a team that will ever win it all without GM Andrew working his magic.
34 437 (19 - 789) Chad Lecavalier has fallen out of the playoffs.  Surprise, surprise!  The bright spot for other GM's in this league is Chad loves to stick around after the meetings and play cards.  How truly sweet is that?
35 393 (H28 - 508) Michael & Ray Elias will change everything when he returns but at the moment Kane or Bust here in Ottawa.  Vancouver is hurting the rankings here and everywhere else.
36 320 (H31 - 430) Charlie Still in 4th in the Atlantic but CTR rating is dropping.  Only sitting with 2 playoff players and Hossa has yet to play a game this season.  Eric Staal has stalled and only bright spot is Kotalik.  Not a pretty team and likely to be out of fourth by next CTR ranking.
37 317 (H37 - 343) Matt GM Matt cannot be happy with this team.  Vancouver is out and when your top scorer is worthless in a deal you can't be happy.
38 258 (H24 - 632) Chad This is getting really ugly.  Last in the Northeast and being carried by Stastny in Colorado.  So far so good, but many predicted the Aves to be on the other end of the standings.  Souray is the only other playoff player and he has 0 points in 3 games and one fucking hell of a headache!
39 255 (L43 - 253) Andrew Five non playoff players.  Least he climb in the CTR Ranking.
40 248 (H40 - 310) Michael & Ray On paper this is one of the very best teams.  Zetterberg, Setoguchi, Wheeler, Recchi, Langkow, Zubrus.  This is good drafting.  Sure right now this team sucks ass, but it is truly good drafting.  Detroit, San Jose and Boston are out of the playoffs right now.  That is the Eastern and Western number one teams from last year and the Wings, cup finalists.  We don't know what to say!
41 246 (L45 - 215) Jr It is actually still pretty ugly but it is still pretty much better than Edmonton.
42 238 (H18 - 796) Marcel Higgins has 2 points in 10 games.  He is your top seeded playoff player.  This team wanted to move to Hamilton - but is best suited for Siberia!
43 222 (H39 - 323) Tyson It hurts when your number one pick (Daniel Sedin) is out.  Oh sure we laugh when it is the other guy...but it kills you when it is you.  How close can he stay over the next month remains to be seen but for a Rookie in a spot that no GM has answers for, we feel for Tyson in Hamilton!
44 184 (H44 - 229) Marcel When your 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks are all non playoffs - oh boy!  Detroit, Montreal and Detroit again were GM Marcel's picks and although Datsyuk, Cammalleri and Rafalski are stars, this team is horrible without them in the playoffs.
45 156 (H32 - 421) Chad OK, Iggy was off to a slow start.  He has since picked it up.  GM Chad Drops!!!  Why?  Well, honestly it is because this teams is brutal!  Montreal is out and not looking great, Tampa Bay, St Louis and Vancouver suck.  So it really doesn't matter how good Iggy is, and we do love Iggy, 5 floaters behind him won't get Chad's Pittsburgh anywhere!
46 144 (H38 - 290, L47 - 130) Tyson Update #5)  Well not much has gone right here so far for GM Tyson.  Losing a Frazen is very costly even though Detroit still hasn't looked great.  Adding Kessel may help the position as he has fallen into last place here in the Southwest.  Parise is the only playoff guy.

When Parise is your only playoff guy, how high do you expect to be ranked?  We love Zach but with Cole and Franzen both long team injuries, although they will be replaced, what will GM Tyson's Blues look like by season's end?
47 55 (H46 - 183) Marcel Well it isn't Marc Savard carrying this team.  So who is it?  Antropov?  Yikes!
48 35 (L48- -20) Scott Savard (Broken Foot)
Lucic (Broken Finger)
Booth (Broken Everything)
Each and everyone one of you can go straight to hell!

2009/10 Rankings at 5 Games

Notes -

Position refers to your NHLP standings.  Good position means you have points to give and potential to improve your playoff players on your team.

Position is ranked into the statistical formula above for the rankings, however, Position disappears from the ranking in the very end when the playoffs are decided and we predict the final cup favorites.  It might mean something now to have 50 points to give, so now we give you potential points so to speak.  If you do nothing with them, in the end, your standings and your 50 points mean nothing.

Fringe refers to your playoff players are near 6,7 and 8 spots, not great for the CTR, but still better than non playoffs which are useless.
