1 1908 (H2 - 1962, L13 - 771) Michael & Ray

(West)
Maverick:  Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.
Air Boss Johnson:  That's a negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.

These two guys are cowboys, Maverick and Goose.  What fear?  The fear was this team might lose some ground without top guns Datsyuk and Cleary for a month.  Well, those two players had no points in January.  Not one!  Did not matter one bit as Benn, Morrow and Sharp got 29 between them and these Jets are now fearless.  This is an awesome team with an opportunity to win it all on a Detroit run to the finals.
2 1874 (L15 - 784) Shawn

(South)
A 77 point month with 5 non hockey days.  This team might have gotten 90 had it not been for the All Star game!  Five players had months in the double digits, while the low lights were Timonen 9 and Daley 7.  They'll need to be better...IF THIS TEAM IS TO REACH 100 IN FEBRUARY!  All players are on home seeds to start the playoffs, with only Pominville a non playoff, for now.  With 27 points to work with, this team can bring something of value in for those points.  We knew GM Shawn was an asset to the NHLP, but right about now, a few GM's might be wishing we still had Henry!
3 1853 (H1 - 2120, L10 - 1004) Shawn

(East)
Henrik Sedin was the reason for the first NHLP deal this season, when GM Shawn, holding down pick number one overall, traded him to GM Charlie (NY Rangers).  This ensured Charlie got Ovechkin and with Crosby picked second overall, Shawn got his man, plus a free waiver which turned into more draft picks.  All in all, a solid move.  Sedin has not disappointed.  "I had Vancouver going to the finals versus Boston" stated Shawn who, if that happens, won't be to terribly off with Horton, Ryder and Seguin, here as well.  With 28 points to work with, all that may be left to do is trade Backes, and his 37 points, and hope his preseason pick is even half right.
4 1724 (H2 - 1923, L15 - 703)  Joel

(West)
Having Peverley a few more times might be the only way to slow this team down.  GM Joel has 63 points to play with.  We guess that means, you are never out of it in the NHLP, with teams with points like that to throw away.  This team has 4 fringe players, all could be dealt with 10 points each if (and when) Joel finds suitors.  As high a CTR, if better players aren't brought in, can Joel's Vancouver win here?  Likely, only if Tampa Bay goes to the finals.  GM Joel might be best to not wait until there are no more players available anywhere, if he even has that option right now.  I guess it depends on who you think is calling the shots?  Those up with the points to give or those out with the players not found in the minors?
5 1560 (H4 - 1730, L19 - 651) Charlie

(South)
This is the leagues big Red Wings team.  The Miami B's with Bergeron, Bertuzzi, Berglund and Brower.  Not Bad.  Zetterberg is the team leader, which is a great thing.  What isn't great, is GM Charlie lost ground to every team chasing him in the division, by almost a double digit month each.  Still up 18 points on 5th, Chuck needs his boys doing a little more, or come March 1st, he will only be up a single digit up on 5th.
6 1482 (H1 - 2037, L24 - 315) Chad

(East)
From a 600 point jump to CTR #1 to a 500 point fall when things came crashing down.  So what happened?  Well for starters, Crosby has one point this month and Pittsburgh has fallen seeds, affecting Crosby, Letang and Staal.  Doan and Keith also dropped seeds since last rating, while no player on the team gained.  The 44 point month affected GM Chad's position, as it was the worst month in the East, tying GM Charlie's NY Rangers.  This team is still just about awesome and can easily be CTR #1 again if (NHL) Pittsburgh climbs in the East.
7 1452 (L24 - 67) Tyson

(South)
A 61 point month would have led either the Eastern Division or Western Division and been second in the North.  This is however, the South.  A 61 point month in the South was below average.  With the teams around them having 77, 70 and 67 point months, GM Tyson has to be asking himself what does he have to do to gain ground here?  Only 5 points up on a playoff spot, and a team that may have over achieved, on paper anyhow.  Even the weak links Hamhuis and Vrbata had 14 between them and are pulling their weight right now.  That may have to continue.  This team may lack first round scoring, but after that, already has a Canucks run all over it.
8 1357 (L18 - 534)  Andrew

(West - Pacific)
Now that is how it is done!  A huge 600 point jump in the CTR takes this team from all dead to mostly dead.
Miracle Max: See, there's a big difference between mostly dead, and all dead. Now, mostly dead: he's slightly alive. All dead: well, with all dead, there's usually only one thing that you can do.
Inigo: What's that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.
GM Andrew now has position to yet improve this team further.  Really only Plekanec is a question mark, as the other players like Selanne, Callahan and Anisimov are battling for 6th and not 8th, although that margin for error is slight at best with such close NHL standings.  This teams biggest problem is scoring, but GM Andrew doesn't build a winner in the first half, never has.  He creates it in the second half, so we'll watch it unfold here, if it is meant to be.
9 1345 (H3 - 1600, L16 - 842) Michael & Ray

(North)
Where is this team without Stamkos?  Top seed in the Eastern Conference, leagues leading scorer and 67 points, almost 30% of this teams scoring!  The co-owners are only 10 points up with Stamkos, which is really scary.  If he got hurt a month, then what?  (Oh ya, big injuries don't affect Mav and Goose!)  Vanek is hot, 16 points to lead the team in January.  This team needs his scoring to stay in the playoffs.  The problem is, when they move his scoring, this team's first round scoring takes a huge hit.  What they bring in as a replacement will be key.  Hell, there is still hope Buffalo could catch Montreal, Atlanta, and Carolina in front of them.  That is the only hope, because Vanek's contract, at $6.4 million cap hit a year won't be moved, seeing as he is signed long term and it doesn't expire until both these GM's are legal drinking age...IN THE STATES!!!
10 1312 (H2 - 1655, L12 - 971) Andrew

(North)
As expected Kane and Antropov were sent packing and although the NHLP Yearbook expected GM Andrew to grab two Western players, he only added Campbell.  Jokinen and his scoring abilities were also brought in, and what a difference he has made!  Andrew's Hawks are the North's top scoring team, with 63 in January, an ass-kicking 20 more than Buffalo (Joel) scored who entered the month 15 points in front of Andrew.  Giroux and Carter lead this team and Hossa now has some playoff support from teammate Campbell.  Andrew is doing what he does in the second half every year, slowly adding and improving, up 200 CTR points since last rating.  Expect the Hawks to be tough and continue to climb towards the NHLP Trading Deadline, with Andrews philosophy that you don't have to get it all, in one deal approach.  Slow and steady wins the race.  (Update:  A tough blow here as Edler has been announced out for anywhere from 'weeks or months' which might even make things harder to decide to keep him or move him.  This team needed to stay healthy, but now it is looking like February might be a tough go to continue to pull away from 5th.)
11 1296 (H10 - 1387, L22 - 333) Chad

(North)
Daniel Sedin and Ruttu teamed up for 33 points in January!  Winnipeg (Mike and Ray) and Los Angeles (Andrew) only had 37!  Then there were Jr's Dallas Stars...Anyhow, these guys are on fire for Chad's Leafs.  Ruttu is finally rated but Ladd seems to be headed in the wrong direction.  Three fringe players and only 6 points to work with.  Chad will need February to be as strong as January, for this team cannot let up or it will be out, just that quickly.
12 1171 (L23 - 425) Jr

(West)
Still going up the ranking.  GM Jr may be hoping Horcoff will get traded, but that is as  unlikely as Gretzky coming out of retirement.  Horcoff has the longest Oilers contract, until 2016, but his low number, high scoring down the stretch, is likely the logical reason for adding him.  Three other players are fringe and GM Jr found out first hand how tough it will be to give his points away.  There are only a very few teams in the NHLP that can trade for non playoff guys, so fringe will likely be in high demand later.  All is good here so far, just not great.  Good usually doesn't beat great when it comes to winning Championships so don't expect Jr to be content.
13 1155 (H1 - 1648, L12 - 834) Matt

(South)
Iginla is doing all he can to get rated, and just might be by the next rating.  Strong in the Eastern Conference, with 5 players on decent seeds, including 4 between Tampa Bay and Boston.  Ribeiro just continues to be an awesome asset to keep or move, depending on where things shake out over the next 6 weeks for GM Matt.
14 1032 (H11 - 1378, L20 - 470) Matt

(North)
Perry (Ana), Duchene (Col), Heatley (SJ) and Boyle (SJ) are all Western players who are battling for the same playoff spots.  Can they all make it?  Yes, likely not though.  Can they all miss?  Yes, likely not though.  All the uncertainly doesn't get any clearly when you mention Savard's name here.  How long is he out?  Can GM Matt hang on to 1st, let along stay in a playoff position now that he is only 15 points up on 5th?  A lot of questions that will have to be answered here before the CTR can place this team higher, and as is, likely will not be one of the top elite teams until something changes.
15 1000 (H4 -1502) Charlie

(East)
GM Charlie is really enjoying this winter.  Not the NHLP, but all the sliding he and the kids have been doing.  Well, Charlie is doing a lot of sliding of late in the NHLP standings and the CTR as well.  Do you ever get the feeling he may over value some of his players?  Seriously!  He has hung on to Fehr all season, even now when injured, on a Washington team that is what, a playoff team?  There are a lot of 17 point playoff guys scoring 0.41 PPG.  Two Wings and two Flyers, two of the best teams in the league - that's four players off top seeds. Ovechkin to boot.  So what is the problem?  Scoring for sure, as this team is 26 points out and still sliding monthly.  Get some of these deadbeats out, to the minors, for scoring of any kind, because as is, and we have said this before, more assets then was necessary are going to have to go, or worst yet, might be the crap that comes back in return.  If Charlie wanted to trade playoff for playoff, he can be in the playoffs tomorrow, so it isn't too late.  You just have to cut the cord is all.  The problem is GM Charlie has the seven best players in the league and can do no better.  So says his agent anyhow!
16 962 (H10 - 1244, L12 - 876) Scott

(East)
Is there a hotter player in the NHLP than former first round pick, 6'6", 230 pounder, and leagues high-scoring defensemen, Yandle?  NO!  With 17 points for the month of January, no one was hotter (Daniel Sedin and Bergeron were as hot with 17 each themselves).  GM Scott added Tanguay for Enstrom, in a sideways move, and has Oshie back scoring to help the offense.  This team has a lot of fringe players and a huge question mark in Kaberle.  Will he move and if so where?  Certainly what you see is not the end team, by any means, yet.
17 772 (H9 - 1209, L20 - 540) Tyson

(East)
The good thing is he already won a cup here.  The bad thing - it is looking like it ain't gonna happen again any time soon!!!  The problem is the 4 fringe players.  Minny has moved into a playoff spot, so Koivu is rated, but this teams top seeded player is Hudler and that isn't something to get real excited about.  GM Tyson added the little pieces last year but this season it might take a bigger piece to change the excitement about repeating.
18  639 (H7 - 1294, L19 - 472)   Marcel

(South)
Eric Staal is hot, as is this entire team in the scoring department.  As far as in high demand, GM Marcel's Panthers likely are not.  A team built on the edge of 8 mile, with 5 players not quite gangsters or exactly sure what turf to call home.  This teams true colors, could be a lot brighter, for they can't get too much worse.
19 572 (H5 - 1446) Ryan

(East)
The Bruins are in ruins once again.  Heard again from the rafters is the chanting which started almost 20 years ago, when then led by GM Ian and his love for Russian players.  The fans were united in Boston with a common theme...their hate for the invaders.  "Things were very different back than" stated Muddy Capone.  "GM Ian tried to build an all Russian team and the fans revolted."  The fans on the right side of the Gardens would yell out "What about the Bruins" and the left side would reply in unison, "Their defectors" and then the entire stadium would come together as one, "And we want our money back!"  Refunds were as rare as success.  Now-a-days, Semin has been that lemon, with zero points in January, helping GM Ryan fall to 7 points out of the playoffs in the Eastern Division.  It isn't the points out, as much as, the teams makeup.  Four fringe players and a Russian who isn't widely known for his playoff prowess.  Ryan has done a great job in Boston the past few years, coming just so close, but this team isn't feeling like those teams, it is feeling like the 90's when the GM who was in charge could never do anything right with the Ruins!
20   472 (H7 - 1430, L20 - 464) Joel

(North)
Take a deep breath.  San Jose is back into a playoff spot and Thornton, Clowe and Pavelski are all rated again.  This team has 5 fringe players, two of them, non playoffs right now.  GM Joel has seemed to have committed himself to the Sharks, but as things sit at this moment, there is no need for anyone to be out shopping for a bigger boat!
21 294 (H13 - 951, L21 - 229) Scott

(West)
One thing you have to know, if you pay attention, is that even at 30 points back, GM Scott will not go quietly.  "The teams in front of us are like deer in our headlights.  We are driving the truck, peddle on the floor, right at them, high beams on" stated GM Scott.  "We are either going to run them over, running them down or have one hell of a spectacular crash trying.  If we do crash, it will be our own recklessness.  If we blow an engine, it won't be for lack of Oil.  Regardless, the RPMs revving red."  Talks is cheap!  This team has, as much baggage, as the other junk CTR ranked teams.  A bunch of question marks for top players Stastny, Toews and Byfuglien.  Maybe the only thing this team might have going for it, is the maniac behind the wheel!
22 251 (H16 - 870, L23 - 22) Ryan

(West)
A waiver and a 7 player drop.  Has GM Ryan ever done such a thing?  Don't expect to see it anytime soon either...
23 -99 (H3 - 1207, L23 - -139) Jr

(South)
This team was never right since about game 10.  The slide started early, and for the second straight year, GM Jr could not right the ship after a slow start to a team of his.  Now 62 points out, after leaving it this long, you just have to wonder what is the point of tying now?  We hammer GM's for not trying, but In all fairness to Jr, several GM's left the Winter Meeting all stating Jr might have got the steal of the meeting in Getzlaf.  He did go for it.  We all know how that turned out, but not for lack of trying.  Sometimes, it just doesn't go right no matter how hard you try, and this might be an example of a bad year, where everything just went to hell early and often.  With a coming Waiver, maybe Jr can grab a few picks, and Dallas can dream of Cup 3 for 2012.
24 -128 (H22 - 502, L24 - -221) Marcel

(North)
Sure you are 48 out, but truly do teams have to stop trying?  There is a difference here and in Dallas (Jr), for it can be argued the effort was put in there.  Imagine trading Pronger for 10 and the Montreal guys for 10 and some grabbing better non playoff scorers a month ago?  Maybe a waiver and a 10 point gain in some 6-6 with what was left.  A trade with what you pick up could then compete for a playoff team, built with 3 Hurricanes and 3 Kings, teams that could yet squeak in and either of them going to the Cup finals and winning it for you.  Why would you not try?

The NHLP has always came out with the Cup Threat Rating (CTR) a couple times a year.  The CTR is also known as the Power Rankings in the NHLP.  It is a time perfected, skill based, best prediction of what teams are the best and what teams have the best chance of winning it all.  It is very accurate.  Like last year it predicted Las Vegas and Dallas as being the two best NHLP teams and of course Dallas beat Las Vegas in the NHLP finals.  Nailing Florida the year before as NHLP winners and many winners over the years.  The CTR really does work.  It isn't a perfect science, but it is not a guess either.  If you are near the top, you have a good team and a shot at winning, near the bottom, a bad team with little hope as is.  The nice thing is you have the power to change your teams position at any time.  This will be on-going and ever changing all year.  How it works - Teams will move up and down based on their Transactions, NHLP Standings (Points back or points to give), Players Points,  Depth Charts, PP Time on the ice and mainly the NHL standings.  You may not like the teams seeded 1st in each Conference to win it all, but the CTR does not go by gut feelings, only 100% statistics.  It holds truest when there are no upsets (but when is that?).  This is the NHLP Power Rankings.

Notes -

Position refers to your NHLP standings.  Good position means you have points to give and potential to improve your playoff players on your team.

Position is ranked into the statistical formula above for the rankings, however, Position disappears from the ranking in the very end when the playoffs are decided and we predict the final cup favorites.  It might mean something now to have 50 points to give, so now we give you potential points so to speak.  If you do nothing with them, in the end, your standings and your 50 points mean nothing.

Fringe refers to your playoff players are near 6,7 and 8 spots, not great for the CTR, but still better than non playoffs which are useless.
